Dr. Jehanzeb Mughal: Maxillofacial Surgeon, Philanthropist, Marathon Runner

Early Life and Family Legacy
Born on August 20, 1973, in Abu Dhabi, UAE, Dr. Jehanzeb Mughal was inspired by his father, Colonel (Retired) Dr. Hussain Ali Mughal (late), who played a key role in establishing medical services for the UAE Armed Forces. Serving from 1968 to 1986, he held positions such as Commander of Sheikh Zayed Military Hospital and Deputy Director of Health Services. His father also co-founded the Pakistan Cultural Centre in 1974 and, with Abu Dhabi-based Pakistanis, the Islamic Mission Trust and Hospital in Korangi, Karachi. The hospital later was handed over to Rufaida Foundation and became Indus Hospital after his untimely death in February 1996.
Education and Training
Dr. Mughal’s early education took place in Abu Dhabi at the British School Al-Khubairat and the International School of Choueifat. After relocating to Karachi in 1986, he completed his A-Levels at St. Patrick’s High School in 1991. He graduated with a BDS from Baqai Dental College in 1997 and pursued postgraduation and advanced surgical training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in England, UK.
Professional Accomplishments
Relocating to Karachi in 2004, Dr. Mughal established a reputable career as a surgeon, educator, and trainer.
• In 2011, he received a unique honor from The Royal College of Surgeons of England, a distinction held by no other Maxillofacial Surgeon practicing in Pakistan.
• He introduced mini-plates and screws in Maxillofacial Surgery in Pakistan and was the founding Course Director for certified training in Karachi in 2009.
• As the Founding Chairman of AO-Cranio-Maxillofacial in Pakistan, he served on the Middle East Board from 2009 to 2015.
Philanthropy and Community Service
Dr. Mughal has consistently dedicated his skills to supporting underprivileged communities and responding to crises:
• He contributed to refugee relief efforts with UNHCR in Yugoslavia in 1999 and provided medical relief after the earthquakes in Turkey (1999) and Pakistan (2005), where he volunteered and performed numerous surgeries in the operation theatres at the Armed Forces Institute of Dentistry (AFID). This was the first time that maxillofacial mini-plates and screws were used for disaster management in Pakistan.
• In March 2007, he established a Dental & Maxillofacial OPD at PEBS Hospital in North Karachi to provide care to underserved populations, particularly focusing on oral cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men in Pakistan.
• In March 2023, he developed Pakistan’s first entirely free Oral Cancer Surgery Unit at PEBS Hospital, where over 400 surgeries have been performed. This initiative has expanding to include free Breast Cancer Screening, Surgery and Free Female OPDs.
Collaboration and Leadership in Trauma Care
Dr. Mughal directed the Craniofacial Trauma Management Course in February 2007, a significant initiative in collaboration with NUST and the Pakistan Armed Forces. Key Patrons included Maj Gen Dr. Shahid S. Qazi HI(M), Commandant AFID, and Lt Gen Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed Baig SI(M), Surgeon General of Pakistan Army/DGMS(IS), who later became a national martyr in 2008.
Commitment to Education and Collaboration
Dr. Mughal has shared his expertise widely, contributing to over 70 conferences and seminars worldwide, including the AO-Davos Conference in December 2014. His efforts continue to advance surgical education and foster global collaboration.
Sports and Advocacy
An avid marathon runner (42.2km), Dr. Mughal is on the verge of completed six world renowned marathon majors in just three years (2023 – 2026), which includes London, Chicago, Tokyo, Berlin, New York, and Boston. He has also completed Amsterdam and Paris Marathons. He uses these efforts to raise awareness and funds for oral and breast cancer treatment, demonstrating his commitment to community health. He has also served as Director of Security and Medical for the 2023, 2024 and 2025 editions of the Karachi Marathon, Pakistan’s only internationally certified full-distance marathon.
Media Involvement
From 2012 to 2015, Dr. Mughal hosted TV shows on HTV (formerly Health TV), focusing on creating awareness and providing knowledge on a broad range of health issues. His shows also later touched on political matters, contributing to public discourse.
